According to beliefs a cross formed on one of the rocks upon his touch and that St. Thomas used to make the Sign of the Cross on the rock, kiss it and pray at Kurisumudi. Says that a miraculous golden cross appeared at that particular spot. Pilgrims going up the `Kurisumudi’ call out incessantly “Ponnum Kurishu Muthappo, Ponmala Kayattom”, meaning “O Patriarch of the Golden Cross! Climb we shall, this golden hill’. Later transfer to visit St. Thomas Kottakkavu Church, Paravur, Ernakulam District, which was established by St.Thomas and considered to be one of the oldest Churches in Kerala. The second church was rebuilt in the 9th century and the third church was built in 1308. Pope Gregory XIII raised the altar of this church to the status of `privileged altar’ in 1575.
